Surfing the net for fish sustainability! 🐟🦈

We walk, sit and read books by it but how much do we actually know about our seas and the creatures that live in them? 🌊🔍 Luke Lythgoe has been reporting about his colleagues who are building genomic notes and tracers to provide a more detailed picture of what happens in the deep blue of our seas.  Why is this important?  Well, such research and insight provides the tools to better aid conservation efforts. A key species is the Atlantic horse mackeral (Trachurus trachurus).  Once widespread in seas around Europe and Africa, it is now classified as ‘vulnerable’ on the IUCN Red List – this document, formed of seven categories, assesses the conservation status of species at a global level.  Why so vulnerable?  Much of its decline is traced to overfishing as it is caught in huge numbers and used in everything from sushi to fish meal. The future of … Continue reading

Watch Genome Generator’s Dr Michelle Strickland on Genomics Lite

Genomics Lite gives you further insight into genomics, biodiversity, and evolution from the people involved in the Darwin Tree of Life project. In Session 2, Dr Michelle Strickland, a research and development scientist from Genome Generators, will be discussing sequencing the genomes of old and new samples. Michelle will share how she hopes to improve methods to extract high quality DNA from a range of organisms being studied in the Darwin Tree of Life. Session 2 is on Thursday 24 June, 4.30pm-5.30pm. Reserve your place ❯ Put your questions to the experts and find out more about how genomics research contributes to understanding in the field. This is a great way to broaden your biology knowledge, learn about modern scientific practices, and it might help if you’re undertaking an EPQ. The sessions will run every Thursday until 8 July, with a new topic each week. Students who attend 2 or … Continue reading
