Removing barriers to communication for students with additional learning needs

Jo works at a large comprehensive school in South Wales in the Autism Spectrum Condition Unit. She explains, โ€œWe used Iโ€™m a Scientist as a social skills lesson. Yes, thereโ€™s interest in science, but really it was so they could talk to the scientists without any pre-judgement.โ€

The text-only format of Iโ€™m a Scientist meant that the key focus was on the questions students were asking, and not on the students themselves. โ€œThe scientists didnโ€™t know the students were on the spectrum, and the conversation flowed.โ€

โ€œ

Some of our students are aware that autism has an impact on their communication skills, but [โ€ฆ] the scientists didnโ€™t know the students were on the spectrum.โ€

โ€œSome of our students really suffer with anxiety,โ€ Jo explains. When a scientist explained that they had been nervous about going to 6th form college, a student could identify with them: โ€œIt helped him feel like he wasnโ€™t alone.โ€

โ€œAnother student learnt that conversations donโ€™t have to be pre-prepared. It gave him the confidence to go with the flow.โ€

Taking part in Iโ€™m a Scientist showed Joโ€™s students that scientists are normal people, just like them: โ€œThe students realised that they could talk with scientists without thinking that theyโ€™re gods in white lab coats; theyโ€™re real people!โ€

Jo would highly recommend Iโ€™m a Scientist to other teachers in ALN or SEN departments or schools: โ€œSome of our students are aware that autism has an impact on their communication skills, but Iโ€™m a Scientist gave them the confidence to join in the conversation. They werenโ€™t facing a person, they didnโ€™t have to look at that person. If they made a mistake, then they made a mistake, and moved on โ€“ it didnโ€™t matter.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m such a fan of Iโ€™m a Scientist now that Iโ€™ve started,โ€ she says, โ€œThe scientists were on the studentsโ€™ level. It didnโ€™t matter which student it was, they were answering at the level of the question. Iโ€™ve got to be honest, I loved using it, and the students loved using it.โ€

โ€œI did not expect the children to have the level of engagement that they had. I thought that we would be finished before we reached the 40-minute limitโ€ฆ but in fact, the students wanted longer. They were so engaged that they didnโ€™t want to come off the computer.โ€
